TOYOTA 86 Update: The Iconic Sportscar Lives on

July 30, 2021

The Toyota 86 has captured the hearts and minds of performance enthusiasts around the country, ever since it was first introduced to the Australian market in 2012.

With its compact dimensions, front-engine/rear-drive layout, responsive drivetrain and affordable price tag, the popularity of the 86 is no surprise with over 20,000 examples sold so far in Australia.

The current era of the 86 is drawing to a close in 2021, with stock of the current 86 extremely limited. Brand new examples of the current 86 are no longer available for customers to order, however there is still a limited range of Toyota Certified Pre Owned, new stock and demonstrator vehicles available for interested buyers.

The story of the iconic 86 doesn’t end there. The all-new GR 86 will take the legacy of the current model to new heights, with a larger more powerful and more responsive engine, a stiffer chassis and the same compact coupe, rear-drive formula that enthusiasts love.

Timing for the introduction of the GR 86 to Australia will be announced in the fourth quarter of this year.

The new GR 86 was seen in action for the first time at the famed Goodwood Festival of Speed in England earlier this month. The two-door coupe’s stunning global dynamic debut provided a flavour of the speed and handling quality delivered by direct development input from the company’s international motorsport operation, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing.

Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the popularity that the 86 has garnered in Australia was due to its impressive blend of performance, style and value.

“Since it arrived in Australia, the 86 coupe has found favour with sports car enthusiasts, whether it is being driven on winding back roads, around town or even out on the racetrack,” Mr Hanley said.

“Its popularity is evident by the demand we are seeing even at the end of the current 86’s lifecycle, showing that fans still have an appetite for compact, lightweight and affordable sports coupes and the new GR 86 will continue to delight fans with updates that will make this an even more fun vehicle to drive.”

When the GR 86 arrives in Australia, it will become the third member of the GR sportscar family, joining the GR Supra coupe and GR Yaris performance hatch and will add a new element to Toyota GAZOO Racing’s growing portfolio of fun to drive vehicles.
