STILL TURNING HEADS

Toyota Corolla has been Australia's most-loved small car for years. It has a mean combination of style, space, safety and attitude, that's also hard to beat. With a revolutionary 100kW Dual VVT-i engine under the bonnet, it has the performance and fuel efficiency to match its stylish appearance.

Corolla still maintains Toyota's long heritage of quality, reliable and well-built vehicles, however it's now bursting with thrills, inside and out, all designed to raise those little hairs on the back of your neck.

Need to make a quick getaway? Toyota's Smart Start Entry and Start System is right up your alley. Available in the Ultima and Levin ZR models, it means you never have to use your key to unlock or start your car again. Pull the handle and the door unlocks. Press the button and you're ready to move. Plus, there's also plenty of room for your mates.

Once you're on the road, plug in your iPod® and crank up the 6-speaker MP3-compatible CD player. To make things easy, you can even use Bluetooth™^ on every model but Ascent.

For some serious action, visit the new Corolla site to check out what all the fur-flinging commotion is about and to view the complete range. Yes, Corolla is packed with more than a lil' action and it's still turning heads.

Australian-made Hybrid Camry gets the green light

With rising petrol prices pinching the pockets and concern about global warming growing, hybrid vehicles are becoming an increasingly popular choice. So, in what is big news for the Australian car industry and for anyone who's thinking of driving greener, the Toyota Camry is soon to be available with Hybrid Synergy Drive. For decades the Camry has been one of Australia's most popular vehicles, and the benefits of owning a Toyota are growing. The locally produced Hybrid Camry will feature specially designed four-cylinder petrol engines working in tandem with an electric motor - a magic combination that boosts performance, produces fewer greenhouse gases – and reduces fuel consumption compared to its petrol equivalent. In fact, the Hybrid Camry uses about 30 to 40 percent less fuel than its petrol equivalent based on standard vehicle testing* (or about the same as a small car). All of which means big savings for the environment - and for you. The Hybrid Camry is due to roll off Victoria's Altona plant production line in early 2010.

NEW LANDCRUISER 200 Series : WORLD MOTORSHOW PREMIERE IN SYDNEY

  • Australia chosen for motorshow debut
  • Petrol and turbo-diesel V8 engines
  • Australian-developed KDSS suspension system
  • World's first "crawl control" system
  • Multi-terrain anti-skid braking system
  • Stronger and bigger
  • Enhanced performance on all surfaces
Toyota's completely redesigned LandCruiser wagon will have its global motorshow debut in Sydney next month before going on sale in November.

The new LandCruiser, to be known as the 200 series, will offer more powerful petrol and diesel V8 engines as well as other new technologies that enhance its performance.

New LandCruiser will be unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show on October 11.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said Australia was chosen for LandCruiser's motorshow debut over the recent Frankfurt motor show in Germany.

"This is a real coup for Australia," Mr Buttner said.

"It reflects the vital role Australia has played in the development of LandCruiser over almost 50 years," he said.

"LandCruiser has helped Toyota establish a deep connection with many of Australia's rural and regional communities - a connection that continues today.

"It has been a key factor in building the foundations for the market leadership that Toyota enjoys today in this country."

New LandCruiser is 60mm longer, 30mm wider and the roofline is 15mm higher - with styling changes that give it an even more powerful presence.

The platform has been completely redesigned and retains a full-frame structure, which has been strengthened to increase safety, reduce noise and vibration and enhance interior comfort.

A double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs replaces the previous torsion-bar set-up, improving handling and stability.

In another breakthrough for Australia, the new LandCruiser is available with the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) - originally developed by WA company Kinetic.

This hydraulic system, used for the first time in a Toyota, controls the front and rear stabiliser bars to provide excellent on-road stability.

KDSS also provides outstanding off-road performance through a larger suspension stroke achieved by effectively disabling the stabiliser bars.

Australian LandCruiser models will feature the choice of a new turbo-diesel V8 engine or a V8 petrol engine improved through intelligent variable valve timing.

Both engines have considerably more power than their predecessors while the turbo-diesel engine offers a dramatic increase in torque.

New LandCruiser petrol models feature the world's first "crawl control" system for driving on surfaces such as rocks, sand or steep hills.

Toyota's CRAWL automatically controls the engine and brakes to maintain very low speeds with minimal spinning or locking of the wheels.

It allows for delicate speed adjustments between approximately 1km/h and 5 km/h. Three speed settings can be selected by the simple turn of a dial.

This allows the driver to have a greater focus on steering and is also effective at extracting the vehicle if it becomes stuck.

LandCruiser can split power between the front and rear wheels through a Torsen® limited-slip centre differential built into the transfer unit of its full-time all-wheel-drive system.

A newly adopted multi-terrain anti-skid braking system provides excellent braking performance even on dirt roads, gravel and sand.

Safety advances include the stronger body structure, vehicle stability control and up to 10 airbags - front, side and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, side airbags for the outboard second-row seats and curtain shield airbags for all three rows.

Inside, LandCruiser offers more space for up to eight people.

Available features include Smart Entry and Smart Start, Bluetooth™ mobile-phone connection, satellite navigation and steering wheel controls.

Next year, LandCruiser will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Australia - marking the arrival of the first two-door LandCruiser FJ25s that worked on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme in 1958.

Fuel Efficient Cars brought to you by Toyota

Do you want to pay less at the petrol station? Do you want a car with greater fuel efficiency?

Well, we have already developed innovative fuel-saving technologies for our cars. Imagine a system that constantly alters the tuning of your car’s engine to save you money as you drive. It’s Toyota’s intelligent variable valve timing system, or VVT-i and it's standard equipment on the petrol engines across a number of Toyota locally built and imported passenger cars, such as the Corolla and all-new Yaris.

And how can Diesel technology, available on models such as Prado and the new LandCruiser 200 series save you money at the pump?

What about Hybrid Synergy Drive or HSD? It features exclusively in Toyota’s award-winning Prius. In Australian Government Standard testing, the Prius achieved 4.4litres/100km fuel economy. That’s up to 50% less consumption than a comparably-sized family car. One tank of fuel could get you an astonishing 1,000km.

VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence)

Imagine a system that constantly alters the tuning of your car's engine to save you money as you drive.

It's Toyota's intelligent variable valve timing system, or VVT-i.

VVT-i improves the way your Toyota engine “breathes” – to provide optimum fuel economy, performance and responsiveness, and lower emissions. It saves you money by deciding when your engine takes its next breath and how it uses that breath.

Toyota VVT-i makes optimum use of two different aspects of a petrol engine's operation. In some driving conditions, such as climbing hills, it improves your engine's volumetric efficiency or the work done from each milli-litre of fuel. In other driving conditions, such as when your engine is idling, it varies what is called the valve overlap – the period when the exhaust valves are about to close and the inlet valves are beginning to open.

VVT-i builds on advances Toyota made in engine breathing (and hence engine efficiency) with its "O2 Advantage" Twin Cam Multi-Valve engines.

In a conventional engine, the valve timing is fixed at a compromise setting, which is applied to different driving conditions - from idle through to sporty driving. This creates inefficiencies in the way the engine breathes, thereby wasting fuel and increasing emissions. However, with VVT-i, inlet camshaft timing is varied according to your needs.

VVT-i is standard equipment on the petrol engines of many of Toyota's imported passenger cars, as well as RAV4, LandCruiser Prado, Tarago, Avensis, HiLux, HiAce and the 2.4-litre Camry (built in Australia).

Diesel

Diesel engines are classic working vehicle engines, famed for their impressive fuel economy which reduces running costs.

Why is a diesel more economical? A litre of diesel fuel has between 10 and 20 per cent greater energy content than petrol. In addition, diesel technology delivers more power per litre of fuel than other technologies. So diesel literally gives more bang for your buck.

Toyota’s Turbo-diesel engines build on those qualities, by creating even greater efficiency, both in better fuel economy and more torque. They offer petrol-engine levels of performance coupled with the economy of diesel.

They offer petrol-engine levels of performance (e.g test results) coupled with the economy of diesel.

Let’s take the example of HiAce van. The 2.5-litre Turbo-diesel LWB van with manual transmission has 30 per cent better fuel economy than the 2.7-litre petrol manual
LWB van.

For an operator covering 20,000 km a year, that’s a fuel saving of 700 litres (based on official ADR81/01 fuel consumption data.)

Official Australian Government fuel consumption figures show the Turbo-diesel models have the best fuel economy in every Toyota model range in which they’re offered – HiAce, HiLux 4x2 and 4x4, LandCruiser Prado and workhorse LandCruiser 79 Series.

HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive)

Hybrid Synergy Drive is Toyota’s innovative combination of petrol engine and electric motors. Utilising the best of each power source, hybrid synergy drive integrates these into a single system that delivers low emissions and excellent fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

So how does it work? The petrol engine and electric motors each perform most efficiently under different conditions. By intelligently switching between the two power sources, hybrid synergy drive provides the highest level of fuel efficiency for cars of the same-size engine displacement.

And how does it lower your running costs? At start and low speeds ranges, hybrid synergy drive runs the car on electric motors only. At cruising speeds, the petrol engine is energy efficient so it takes over. Accelerating calls for extra power so the two systems work together for maximum efficiency. When the car comes to rest, no energy is wasted by idling – the engine, motors and generator are automatically shut down. And the battery has charged while driving so there’s no need to plug in.

Hybrid synergy drive features exclusively in Toyota’s award-winning Prius. In Australian Government Standard testing, the Prius achieved 4.4litres/100km fuel economy. That’s up to 50% less consumption than a comparably-sized family car.
One tank of fuel could get you an astonishing 1,000km.

Holiday Motoring Survival List

The holiday atmosphere is impossible to avoid - not that you want to. It is the time for lazy picnic lunches and long BBQ's and a time when Australian's like to load up and hit the road for distant shores or plains or hills.

Australia of course is a big county and that often means big travel distances to get to our favourite destinations. The last thing we want to do is start or finish our holiday on a sour note, stranded by the side of the road with a broken-down car and equally steamy family.

You can however, take some relatively simple precautions to ensure that the most significant moments or our trip are the ones you look back on with fondness:-

  • Have your Toyota regularly service by a Toyota Dealer
  • Give your car a five-minute 'health check' before leaving
  • Check tyre pressures and possibly increase them for greater loads
  • Check oil and water levels at your destination
  • Carry a basic survival pack
  • Plan your route with scheduled breaks
  • Load your vehicle carefully
  • Make allowances for extra weight in vehicle
  • Prevent travel sickness
  • Drive smoothly and save petrol
  • Have a good time!
