Why time is more important than distance
When you look into your Toyota Warranty and Service Handbook you'll notice that service intervals are both distance and time based. This is because even if you haven't clocked up enough kilometres to make the next service interval, the amount of time between services means items like oil and filters may be nearing the end of their performance life.
More importantly, vehicles subject to extremes of driving conditions such as dusty roads or constant towing require more regular servicing.
Regular maintenance is critical for city vehicles, especially because heavy traffic driving over small distances can cause sludging of engine oil.
If your vehicle is left too long between services, sludgy oil will reduce the effectiveness of vital lubrication, cleaning and cooling of the engine, which is needed to maintain engine performance. So, its important to at least have your oil and filter changed regularly.
To ascertain your vehicle's servicing interval requirements, it is best to check the Warranty and Service Handbook provided with your vehicle. Also, discuss the 'typical' sort of driving you'll be doing with your Toyota Service Manager, and he or she will advise how regularly your car will need servicing.
Note that effective from 2005, within the first 3 months or 5,000kms from delivery of your new Toyota vehicle, your Toyota Dealership will be pleased to offer you a 'Complimentary Vehicle Inspection'. Your Dealer will respond to any queries you may have about your vehicle and make sure you are comfortable and familiar with your new Toyota. This inspection is complimentary and there is no requirement for Engine Oil or Oil Filter change at this time. Please refer to the rear of the Inspection voucher (which can be found at the front of your Warranty & Service Handbook) for a comprehensive description of General & Engine inspection items.
Additional Service Requirements
If you constantly put your Toyota through a punishing driving schedule under extreme conditions, then the best way to ensure long term performance is with increased maintenance.
Such conditions could include any or all of the following:
- Driving on rough, muddy or snow-melted roads.
- Driving on dusty roads.
- Towing trailers, caravans or boats, or using a car top carrier.
- Repeated short trips (less than 8 km) in freezing conditions.
- Extensive idling and or low speed driving for long distance such as taxis, couriers, etc.
- Continuous high speed driving (80% or more at maximum vehicle speed) for over 2 hours.
Maintenance
Apart from scheduled servicing, does my vehicle need other maintenance? It's always important to listen to your car and deal with any problems immediately. Be on alert for changes in performance, sounds and visual tip-offs that indicate a service or repairs may be needed. Some other clues to look for include engine stumbling, strange engine noises, a leak under the vehicle, a change in noise from the exhaust, spongy feeling brake or clutch pedals, high engine temperature, or if the vehicle steering pulls to one side. If you do experience any of these early warning signs, make sure that you have your local Toyota Service Centre inspect your vehicle at the earliest possible opportunity.
